Marius Duboule is a guitarist, composer, and improviser originally from Switzerland and currently based in New York. Drawing on a lifelong study of classical guitar performance, jazz, and contemporary improvisation, his work is informed by a sensitive musicality and collaborative spirit which he brings to a diverse range of projects.
From 2012-14 Marius attended Queens College, studying with guitarists Miles Okazaki and Steve Cardenas, pianist Jacob Sacks, and saxophonist Ohad Talmor. At the same time, he was actively participating in the city’s jazz and improvised music scenes, beginning collaborative relationships which have grown into bands and long-term projects. Notable examples include a trio with saxophonist Tony Malaby and drummer Billy Mintz, which performed at the legendary Cornelia St. Cafe in 2017. That same year, Marius founded Zero Point, an improvising quartet featuring acclaimed multi-instrumentalist Daniel Carter. Zero Point’s debut recording Thoughts Become Matter was praised by Downtown Music Gallery as “a refined brand of freedom […] here to help soothe our souls” and the band has toured internationally with support from the Geneva Cantonal Office for Culture and Sport and the Swiss Interpreter Foundation.
More recent projects include entr[ ]py, an electro-acoustic collaborative duo with Simon Kanzler and the Marius Duboule Quartet featuring Ohad Talmor, bassist Thomas Morgan, and drummer Kenny Wollesen.
A fruitful and long-lasting musical partnership has also developed between Marius and vocalist Annie Chen. Marius has toured China multiple times as a member of Chen’s band, performing at venues including Blue Note Beijing and JZ Shanghai and Hangzhou. Together, they have produced two albums: Secret Treetop (2018) and Guardians (2024), the latter featuring Marius’ unique arrangements of original compositions by Chen.
Beyond his role as a guitarist and composer, Marius has developed a parallel career as a sound engineer, specializing in live sound and mixing/mastering under the mentorship of Grammy-winning producer Dave Darlington. Recently, Marius has also joined the guitar faculty at Brooklyn Conservatory of Music.
Marius’ work has been recognized through several awards and honors throughout his career. He was awarded the Best Artist Award by the Fara Sabina Jazz Festival in 2013, and his composition Tokuchō was featured in David Berkman’s The Jazz Harmony Book. Most recently, his arrangements for the CAC Blue Children’s Choir (Hangzhou, China) were used to win the gold medal in the Jazz category at the 2023 World Choir Games in Korea and a silver medal at the 2024 games in New Zealand.
